  • New connection mode ECHO
  • BY: CHRIS

Finally! Your Freedom now has a new connection mode that uses ICMP ECHO packets. Contrary to other connection modes, ECHO mode requires not only sufficient privileges to use raw sockets (on Windows this means you need administrator rights and run the YF client as administrator -- right-click, then choose "run as administrator" --, on Linux this means root) but also a native-code addition in an external dynamic link library (DLL on Windows, SO on linux) because standard Java does not support raw sockets. ECHO mode is therefore only available on these platforms:

    • Windows XP/Vista/7/8 32bit/64bit
    • PC Linux 32bit/64bit

Right now, ECHO mode does not work on Apple computers or any other systems.

In ECHO mode, the port number has no meaning; use whatever you like. The YF client will automatically determine the maximum packet size and use it. There are some tuning parameters like in DNS and UDP mode but right now they cannot be configured in the GUI; this will be added soon. If ECHO mode works for you but the performance just isn't too good yet, do not despair! It will never be as good as in HTTPS mode but you'll soon be able to squeeze the last drop out of it.

ECHO mode requires YF client version 20121017-03 or newer. Windows 64bit supported since client version 20121022-01.
